How Your Winter Clothes Can Secretly Wreck Your Posture (and Simple Fixes That Actually Help)

North London Chiropractor’s guide to dressing warm without paying the price with your back

Hi, it’s Bianca from Posture & Wellness in North London.

Winter dressing is tricky, isn’t it? You want to stay warm, but a lot of the clothes we reach for every day can quietly pull us out of alignment and we don’t even notice until the stiffness sets in.

I see it all the time in the clinic: patients who suddenly realise their favourite winter coat or boots have been making their shoulders round or their lower back ache more than usual. The good news? You don’t have to freeze to protect your posture just choose clothes that support your body instead of fighting it.

The biggest culprits I see every winter

  • Heavy, bulky coats and jackets Thick padding and extra weight drag your shoulders forward and down. When you sit (on the Tube, at your desk, driving), that bulk pushes you into a slouch and flattens your lower back.
  • Large, heavy scarves or multiple layers around the neck Anything that pulls your chin down or adds weight to your upper body closes your chest and encourages a forward head posture the classic recipe for neck and upper-back tension.
  • Shoes that don’t support your natural movement Many winter boots are flat, rigid, or overly cushioned in ways that change how your feet hit the ground. That forces your ankles, knees, and hips to compensate, throwing off your whole posture from the bottom up often leading to tight hips or a swayed lower back.
  • Bags that hang on one shoulder Heavy tote or cross-body bags pull one side of your body down, creating a permanent tilt that your spine has to fight against all day.

Small changes that make a big difference

Go for lighter, more fitted outer layers (wool coats or slim down jackets) instead of massive puffers. They keep you warm without the extra drag on your shoulders.

Choose scarves that you can drape loosely rather than wrap tightly. A soft, lightweight one does the job without forcing your head forward.

When picking winter shoes, think about how they affect your breathing, stability, and overall posture. Options like minimalist or barefoot-style shoes can be great because they allow your feet to move and feel the ground more naturally encouraging better balance and a more upright stance. (We often check this in the clinic by looking at how shoes influence the way you stand and breathe.)

Switch to a backpack or a bag with a cross-body strap that sits high on your back. Even weight on both sides means no more uneven pulling.

Layer smartly: slim thermal base layers under your coat keep you warm without adding bulk that forces you into a slouch when you sit down.

How to Bring More Movement Into Your Day

I’ve had patients switch just their footwear or coat and tell me, “I feel so much taller and less tense by the end of the day.” It’s amazing how much difference it makes.

Of course, clothes alone can’t fix deeper misalignments that’s where Advanced BioStructural Correction™ (ABC™) comes in. It gently realigns your spine so your body holds good posture naturally, no matter what you’re wearing.

If your winter wardrobe has been leaving you feeling hunched or achy, try one or two of these swaps this week.
