September 13 Is All About Positivity & Here’s How to Make It Count

Sep 8, 2025 | Mental Health

Mark your calendars: September 13th is Positive Thinking Day—a wonderful reminder to embrace optimism and spread good vibes to those around us.

Experts suggest that positive thinking can enhance your immune system, reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, alleviate stress, and improve overall physical health. But how can you cultivate genuine positivity, especially when life feels overwhelming? What can you do on September 13th (and every day!) to spread a bit more positivity in this world?

The truth is that it all starts with you. So, here are some ideas that you can use this Saturday to level up your positive thinking and spread those vibes to everyone around you.

Tip #1: Start Your Day with Gratitude

Before reaching for your phone or diving into your to-do list, take a few moments to mentally note three things you’re grateful for. They can be as simple as having a comfortable bed, enjoying your morning coffee, or appreciating good health.

Writing down what you’re thankful for helps solidify these positive thoughts and creates a collection of uplifting moments you can revisit. This practice also trains your brain to notice the good things that might otherwise go unnoticed and can gradually shift your mindset.

Tip #2: Practice Random Acts of Kindness

Nothing spreads positivity quite like unexpected kindness. Small gestures can have enormous impacts on both the giver and receiver. So, consider holding the door open for someone, paying for the coffee of the person behind you in the queue, or simply offering a genuine compliment to a colleague or stranger.

Tip #3: Surround Yourself with Uplifting People

Motivational speaker Jim Rohn popularized the saying, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” In other words, the company you keep has a significant influence on your outlook on life.

This means that it pays to make a conscious effort to spend time with people who lift you up, support your goals, and maintain a generally positive attitude. These relationships provide emotional support during difficult times and amplify joy during good ones.

Tip #4: Challenge & Reframe Negative Self-Talk

The conversation you have with yourself throughout the day profoundly impacts your mood and outlook. As you go about your day or week, pay attention to your internal dialogue and challenge those negative thoughts when they arise.

Instead of thinking: “I’m terrible at this,” try reframing to: “I’m learning and improving with practice.” This offers yourself compassion, and when you do this, you’ll be more open to showing compassion for others, too. Positive self-talk often has a ripple effect!

Another helpful tip here: when you catch yourself engaging in negative self-talk, pause and ask: “Would I speak to a good friend this way?” Often, we’re far harsher with ourselves than we’d ever be with others. So, use this day to take a moment to check yourself, challenge those negative thoughts, and reframe them!

Tip #5: Celebrate Your Wins (Even Small Ones)

Acknowledging progress, no matter how small, builds momentum and maintains motivation. Did you drink enough water today? Celebrate it. Finished a challenging task at work? Give yourself credit. Had a pleasant conversation with a stranger? That counts too.

Create a habit of recognising these daily victories. You might even want to start keeping a “wins” list in your phone or share achievements with supportive friends. This practice helps you recognise that positive things happen every day, even when life feels difficult or stagnant.
