Across the globe, three out of five people die from conditions linked to chronic inflammation, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and cancer. And this is why reducing inflammation is such a hot topic in the health and wellness world.
While researching ways to lower inflammation, you’ve likely come across the supplement NAC (N-acetylcysteine). NAC is a form of the amino acid cysteine, and your body uses it to produce glutathione (often referred to as the “master antioxidant”). Glutathione is important for reducing oxidative stress and mitigating inflammation.
Interestingly, NAC has been used in medicine for decades as a treatment for paracetamol overdose and is recognised by the WHO as an essential medicine. More recently, it’s gained popularity as a wellness supplement. But is it actually worth taking?
Benefits of NAC
Many of NAC’s benefits are related to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. So, here’s what the research shows!
Improves Glutathione Levels
NAC provides the cysteine your body needs to produce glutathione, which protects your cells from oxidative damage. As we age, glutathione levels naturally decline. But supplementing with NAC may help keep those levels topped up.
Supports Respiratory Health
NAC has a long history as a mucolytic, meaning it helps thin and break down mucus. For people with chronic respiratory conditions such as COPD or bronchitis, research suggests that it may reduce flare-ups and improve lung function.
May Support Brain Health
NAC crosses the blood-brain barrier and helps regulate glutamate, an important neurotransmitter. Early research has explored its use alongside treatment for depression and neurodegenerative conditions. However, results are mixed, but the potential is encouraging.
Helps With Immune Function
By replenishing glutathione and reducing oxidative stress, NAC may help the immune system work more efficiently. One study found that people taking 600 mg of NAC twice daily for six months reported significantly fewer flu symptoms than those in a placebo group. In other words, taking NAC may help you and your family get fewer colds and flus, or at least potentially recover from them faster!
Supports Liver Health
Your liver performs over 500 functions in the human body. So taking care of it is undeniably crucial for overall health!
As mentioned above, NAC is the go-to treatment for paracetamol overdose; this is largely because it offers support for liver detoxification. Yet, outside of emergencies, it may also offer general liver support by helping neutralise toxins and reduce inflammation. In turn, reduced inflammation may lead to a lower risk of various life-threatening diseases.
Who Should Not Take NAC?
While NAC is generally considered safe and well-tolerated, some individuals should avoid it, including:
- People with asthma (NAC may trigger bronchospasm).
- Individuals with a bleeding disorder or who take blood thinners.
- Individuals undergoing planned surgery in the next two to three weeks.
At the same time, NAC can interact with certain medications, including nitroglycerin, and should be discussed with your family doctor before use if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or on any regular medication.
As for side effects, most people tolerate NAC well at typical doses of 600-1200mg per day. The most common side effects are mild and digestive, such as nausea, bloating, or an upset stomach. However, these tend to improve when taking NAC with food.
Taking a Whole-Body Approach to Your Health
Supplements like NAC can be useful, but they should be part of a broader health approach. In other words, supplements should always supplement what you’re already doing. How you move, how your body is aligned, and how well your nervous system functions all still play a role in your overall health and wellness.
