World Spine Day 2025: 5 Simple Habits for a Stronger & Healthier Spine

World Spine Day takes place on Thursday, October 16, 2025. With lower back pain impacting 619 million people across the globe, this day aims to raise awareness of the importance of spinal health. After all, your spine supports your entire body, transmits signals from the brain to every organ and muscle, and plays a key role in how you move, sit, and function every single day.

But for optimal spinal health, small changes can go a long way! So, in the spirit of World Spine Day, here are five simple habits for a stronger and healthier spine.

1: Sleep on Your Side

This may sound counterintuitive, especially since we’re often told otherwise. Yet, sleeping on your back can actually push your spine out of alignment. This occurs gradually, so it can also be hard to spot until pain arises.

When you sleep on your back, your heavier lower body sinks into the mattress, forcing your upper body and head forward. This gradual displacement can compromise your breathing, affect heart function, and create pain throughout your body.

However, side sleeping, particularly on your left side, helps maintain your spine’s natural alignment while improving circulation and reducing snoring.

2. Take Snack-Sized Movement Breaks

If you work at a desk, setting a timer for hourly movement breaks can prevent aches and pains before they happen. Even a two-minute walk or a few simple stretches can be beneficial.

These “movement snacks” help reset your posture, improve blood flow to spinal tissues, and reduce the cumulative stress that builds up from prolonged sitting. They’re basically mini-resets for not only your spine but your whole body!

3. Watch How You Carry Heavy Items

Whether it’s groceries, a laptop bag, or gym gear, the way you carry weight has a bigger impact on your spine than you might realise. Relying on one shoulder or always holding items on the same side forces your spine to compensate, eventually creating imbalances over time.

To protect your back, switch sides regularly when carrying a bag, opt for a backpack with both straps when you can, and distribute weight evenly when lifting or carrying multiple items. These small but important adjustments help prevent the compensatory patterns that often lead to pain, tension, and long-term dysfunction.

4. Stay Hydrated

Yes, really!

Your spinal discs are roughly 70-90% water, acting as shock absorbers between your vertebrae. When you’re dehydrated, however, these discs lose their cushioning, making your spine more vulnerable to injury and degeneration.

So, this is your reminder to aim for consistent hydration throughout the day rather than gulping large amounts occasionally. Keep water nearby (such as a bottle or glass) and sip regularly!
