The secret is out: In Netflix’s recent documentary Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones, many people discovered exactly why certain areas of the world tend to live longer than the rest of us. And surprisingly, these habits aren’t exactly ground-breaking.
So, what are some of their secrets? Well, here are just a few!
1. They Incorporate Beans Into a Whole Foods Diet
All five blue zones emphasise the importance of a whole foods diet. This means almost next-to-no processed or fast foods. Instead, it’s all about whole grains, greens, tubers, nuts, and beans. Beans are also a crucial piece—in fact, a daily cup could add years to your life!
2. They Sip On Red Wine & Tea
Moderate alcohol consumption, particularly red wine, is common in most Blue Zones. The key is moderation—usually 1-2 glasses per day, enjoyed with food and friends. Interestingly, while you might find these Blue Zones sipping on tea or red wine regularly, you won’t find them indulging in much beef or dairy. While they may consume some, it’s just not as big of a part of their diet as it is in other areas of the world. Just something to keep in mind!
3. They Know Community Is Essential
Blue Zone cultures tend to keep aging parents and grandparents nearby or in the home, commit to a life partner, and invest time and love in their children. In fact, we know that keeping loneliness at bay is key to a happy and fulfilling (and long!) life. The Blue Zones just proved it once again.
After all, humans are very social creatures. We rely on it for survival, and we all learn the importance of teamwork and collaboration from a young age. So, grab your tribe and hold them close; they’re more important than you might think!
4. They Lead a Purpose-Drive Life
In Okinawa, it’s called “ikigai.” In Nicoya, “plan de vida.” Both translate roughly to “reason for being.” Having a sense of purpose and a reason to wake up each morning is associated with a higher life expectancy. Whether caring for family, contributing to the community, or pursuing a passion, Blue Zone centenarians stay engaged with life.
So, use this as your sign to find that purpose or passion; it’s inevitably important!
5. They Take Daily Walks
The geography of Okinawa, Ikaria, and Sardinia plays a crucial role in their inhabitants’ longevity. These three Blue Zones are nestled in narrow, steep regions, historically isolated from major roadways. This topographical seclusion has had profound effects on the local lifestyle.
First, the rugged terrain naturally encourages physical activity. Residents regularly navigate hilly paths in their daily routines, providing consistent, low-impact exercise. This built-in workout regimen (mostly walking) contributes significantly to their overall health and fitness. On top of this, these areas of the world experience relative isolation, forcing a tight-knit community even more, and, in many of them, it’s also given way to preserving traditional life.
At the end of the day, the beauty of Blue Zone wisdom lies in its simplicity. The challenge, of course, is consistency.
