As we step into 2025, it’s tempting to make grand resolutions about completely transforming our health. But when it comes to obtaining better health and wellness, it’s the small, consistent habits that truly make a lasting difference—especially in your day-to-day life. So, what small changes can you make today? Here are six of our favourites.
1. Start the Year With a Correct Work Set-Up
Have you checked your work set-up? Does it support your posture or hinder it? Not sure? Send us a photo or video and we can advise you! Ideally, we don’t want to be hunched over looking at our devices all day, but having a proper desk set-up can significantly reduce this and ensure a healthy spine and overall wellness.
2. The Morning Stretch Micro-Routine
Forget promising yourself hour-long morning yoga sessions. This is a big commitment, and none of us truly love the idea of getting up an hour earlier. Instead, start with one to three rounds of gentle dynamic stretching, specifically recommended by our team at Posture & Wellness for you and your body, first thing in the morning (Note: we don’t recommend static stretching). These few minutes can help wake up your muscles and set a positive tone for the day.
Not sure what we recommended as stretches for you? Find them in the app or request a hard copy from our front desk.
3. The Standing Swap
Standing desks can be great ways to break up a long workday sitting at your desk. If you’re not ready to invest in one yet, start by standing for one phone call or virtual meeting each day. This small change can break up long periods of sitting and engage your core muscles. From here, you can gradually increase this as it becomes comfortable or potentially invest in a standing desk!
4. The Water Bottle Walk
Instead of keeping a water bottle at your desk, place it slightly out of reach. This creates a natural reason to stand up and move regularly throughout the day. Those few extra steps add up! Plus, the movement helps prevent muscle stiffness and sitting for far too long.
5. The Evening Unplug
We often resolve to completely transform our sleep habits, but let’s, again, start smaller: Turn off one device 30 minutes earlier than usual. This may help reduce neck strain from looking down at the screen, plus it helps your body prepare for better sleep (artificial light and sleep don’t exactly go hand-in-hand).
6. The Mindful Carry
A simple trick to prevent pain or nagging injuries from becoming something bigger is to simply be more mindful when it comes to how you carry everyday items. Here’s some tips:
- Balance your shopping bags between both hands
- Make multiple trips from your car to your door when bringing groceries or bags inside
- Wear your backpack on both shoulders
- Position your bum bag correctly around your waist (in the center and not to one side!)
Small Steps = Big Changes
These mini-habits work because they don’t require massive lifestyle changes or expensive equipment. They fit naturally into your existing routine and build upon daily activities yo’’re already doing. Over time, these small adjustments can lead to significant improvements in your posture, strength, and overall well-being.
