Happy Pride Month, everyone!
June is a special time of year when we come together to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, honour the progress made in the fight for equality, and recommit ourselves to creating a world where everyone can live authentically and love freely.
Did You Know…
- The rainbow flag, which represents pride, was designed by artist Gilbert Baker in 1978. Since then, the rainbow flag has become a universal symbol of LGBTQ+ pride and diversity. Each color on the flag represents a different aspect of the community: red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, blue for harmony, and purple for spirit.
- Pride Month is celebrated in June to commemorate the Stonewall Uprising, a series of spontaneous demonstrations by members of the LGBTQ+ community against a police raid that took place on June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn in New York City. In fact, the UK’s first Pride march took place in London on July 1, 1972, with approximately 2,000 participants. This first Pride march in the UK was inspired by the Stonewall Uprising in the United States.
- In 2014, same-sex marriage became legal in England, Wales, and Scotland. In 2020, Northern Ireland followed suit.
- In 2000, the UK government lifted the ban on LGBTQ+ individuals serving openly in the armed forces.
