Are you ready to shake up your workday routine? On Your Feet Britain, taking place on Thursday, 24 April 2025, is a nationwide movement encouraging desk-based workers to break free from their chairs and embrace more active workdays. With 2 million participants across Britain, this free initiative is transforming how we think about workplace movement.
So, how can you join in? How can you encourage your office to get on your feet? And why should you?
Movement Matters: Here’s Why!
We all know sitting for long periods isn’t great for our health, but the benefits of regular movement throughout your workday go far beyond just physical health. Research consistently shows that incorporating more movement into your day can improve mental clarity, enhance motivation, better concentration, and increase overall well-being. Even small changes can make a significant difference in how you feel and perform at work.
In other words, little bits of movement could potentially contribute to our lifespan and healthspan (how well we live during our life, free from disease or pain). Who doesn’t want to live longer and better?
Simple Ways to Get Moving
Getting involved doesn’t have to mean completely abandoning your desk or disrupting your workday. Consider posting a sign at work (with the approval of your upper management) outlining how everyone can get up and move a bit more. Here are our best ideas!
During meetings and calls, you can:
- Stand up whilst on the phone.
- Suggest walking meetings for one-to-ones.
- Position yourself at the back of the room during presentations so you can stand.
Throughout your workday, try to:
- Take a standing break from your computer every 30 minutes.
- Walk to colleagues instead of sending emails.
- Use the stairs rather than the lift.
- Eat lunch away from your desk.
The beauty of On Your Feet Britain is its flexibility—whether you’re in a traditional office, working from home, or in a hybrid setting. To make the most of the day, consider:
- Teaming up with colleagues to track your collective movement.
- Setting up a friendly competition between departments.
- Sharing your activities on social media using #OnYourFeetBritain and #OYF2025.
- Encouraging your workplace to register as a participating organisation.
When it comes down to it, this day is simply about making small, sustainable adjustments to reduce sitting time and increase movement throughout your day. Every step counts, and, like we said, even minimal changes can lead to significant benefits for your health and well-being.
Get your workplace and co-workers to take part in On Your Feet Britain®—the national activity awareness day when two million desk-based workers across Britain participate in a variety of fun and simple activities to #SitLess and #MoveMore at work.
