National love your feet day this week!

If you are getting adjusted at our office, you will already know how important your feet and footwear are to the rest of your body! 

Our feet are our primary mode of transportation. They quietly and faithfully help us stand, swim, run, walk, play sports, jog, skip and dance. They take us to school and work.

Our feet withstand all the things we do in our everyday lives and accomplish things our hands cannot.

Taking care of our feet is important for preventing long-term problems, throughout your entire body. Years of wear and tear can be hard on them, as can disease, bad circulation, improperly trimmed toenails, and poorly fitting shoes. 

Approximately, 75% of the adult population has a foot problem and improper shoe choices account for most of those problems. Wearing properly fitted shoes, not only helps with the mechanics of your feet and to prevent things like bunions which can be very painful. But also, supports the rest of your body and prevents hip, knee, back, and even neck pain! 

So, what type of shoe should you be wearing and what type of shoe should you be avoiding?

  • Your shoes should be flat on the inside – i.e., no arch support! I repeat contrary to popular belief, an arch support is not good for you.
  • You can have a slight heel on your shoe up to 1.5-2 inches, but obviously high heels are not good for our feet or backs.
  • You want to have a wide fit to the toe box on your shoes to allow space for your toes. They are not happily squished into pointy stilettos or men’s dress shoes! 

Making sure you have the correct shoes is a much bigger deal than most people think.  So next time you’re in for your adjustment ask one of your chiropractic assistants to check your shoes to see if they are working well for you! They can help you with the right advice.
