Sober Curious? Here’s What You Should Know

Jan 8, 2024 | General Health

Alcohol has long been a staple in holiday celebrations and more. Many people even use it to take the edge off after work or a particularly long day. But now that we’re becoming more aware of the negative side of alcohol, many people are becoming sober curious or foregoing alcohol altogether.

With the holidays behind us, maybe you’re trying to cut back too. So, what should you know? In this article, we take a brief look at how reducing your alcohol intake can lead to a better quality of life and what you can do to reduce your consumption.

The Benefits of Going Alcohol-Free

Many are referring to alcohol as this generation’s cigarettes. We know it’s not exactly good for us, but we love to drink it. However, if there’s any time to get sober curious, it’s now. Plus, cutting back on your alcohol intake or eliminating alcohol altogether can have various benefits including:

  • Reduced risk of heart disease.
  • Lower blood pressure.
  • Improved sleep.
  • Improved insulin resistance.
  • Enhanced skin health.
  • Increased energy.
  • Enhance mental clarity and cognition.

If you’re sober curious, it might help to ask yourself why you drink. Perhaps it’s the social pressure, or maybe you use it to deal with stress. Getting to the bottom of this can help you decide if going sober is right for you. At the same time, if you have a problem with alcohol, it’s important to seek out professional help.

How Can You Cut Back?

Dry January is upon us. So, here are a few things you can consider when cutting back or eliminating alcohol for the foreseeable future.

  • Manage your environment. If you’re more likely to drink at the pub on Friday nights, try finding something else to fill this time. Maybe going to a movie or dinner with friends is more manageable.
  • Move your body. Endorphins can help us feel good and boost our mood. In turn, this can help us find other ways to feel good outside of alcoholic drinks.
  • Learn a new hobby. That pottery class you’ve been debating going to? Or that yoga session you’re always eyeing in the studio nearby? Now is the time to try it out!
  • Surround yourself with people who have the same goal. This can help you motivate each other and stick with it.
  • Try other fun non-alcohol drinks, such as flavoured or sparkling water. Lemonade is also a great option for a “fancy” drink sans alcohol.
