The Power of the Sun

Jan 2, 2023 | General Health

While we might not be getting as much sunny weather as we would like this time of year, hopefully, you can use some of this info for inspiration to get outside (no matter how gloomy it might seem!).

The sun has an incredible impact on our health and well-being. So, let’s take a moment to give this star some serious credit! What should you know about the sun and your health?

The Sun Regulates Your Sleep-Wake Cycle

Trouble sleeping? Exposing yourself to some sun during the day might just help.

Sunlight exposure is associated with an improved circadian rhythm and better sleeps. This is because the sun suppresses the hormone melatonin. At night, when it’s dark, our body releases melatonin, which helps regulate our sleep habits. In fact, exposure to some sunshine first thing in the morning (or at first light) can help regulate your circadian rhythm and help you have more energy throughout your day.

Sunlight Improves Your Mood

Sunlight increases the release of serotonin in the brain, which helps you feel calm and happy. Interestingly, this is the theory as to why many people experience Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) during the winter months. Simply put, there isn’t as much sunlight, which means our brains don’t release as much serotonin.

Luckily, there are ways around this. For example, light therapy boxes have helped countless individuals with SAD throughout the darker seasons.

The Sun Helps Build Strong Bones

The ultraviolet light rays from the sun aren’t all bad. These light rays actually help your body create vitamin D from cholesterol in the skin. Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for bone health. In particular, vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, which is vital for repairing and laying down new bone.

Sunlight May Help Improve Certain Skin Conditions

Sun has the incredible power to potentially treat eczema, psoriasis, acne, and jaundice. One research study even shows how the sun’s immunological effects improved skin health and reduced inflammation in individuals with psoriasis.

Staying Safe in the Sun

While some sun is definitely good for your body and mind, too much can cause irreversible damage to your skin. This time of year, we may not have to worry too much about this. Yet, come summer (or a winter getaway!), here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • 5-15 minutes is enough time each day to gain all the benefits from the sun.
  • If you are outside for longer, apply sunscreen, and don’t forget to reapply!
  • Wear a hat and sunglasses when staying outside for longer durations, especially in the warmer months.
  • Alternatively, on your winter getaway, you can plan to spend time both in the shade and sun.
