We’ve all been there: The early afternoon rolls around and we feel exhausted (to say the least). That afternoon slump can undeniably hinder your productivity and get in the way of any plans you might have. Luckily, there are ways to overcome it—and even prevent it altogether.
So, let’s dig into how you can overcome that afternoon energy dip and maybe not experience it at all. That way, you can crush your future work projects, nail that next workout, or simply stay on track with your afternoon plans or to-do list.
Tip #1: Eat At The Same Times Each Day
The body runs on rhythms. And our blood sugar levels have a lot to do with our energy and mood during our days. The main thing that controls our blood sugar? What we eat!
Eating at the same times each day can help our body regulate this rhythm. Additionally, we want to ensure we’re eating balanced and nutritious meals. This means having protein alongside carbs. Protein and high-fibre carbs help slow down digestion, which allows sugar to be slowly absorbed in the bloodstream. In turn, this prevents blood sugar highs and lows that might be messing with your energy.
A few examples to try include Greek yogurt, berries, and nuts, chicken and veggies, salmon and asparagus, and eggs with cheese and veggies.
Tip #2: Move Your Body
This one might seem fairly obvious. But when we are tired, moving is often the last thing we want to do, yet also the best. Research even indicates individuals who exercise regularly have reduced feelings of fatigue. This may come down to the fact that physical activity improves mitochondria (the powerhouses of our cells) function and quality.
However, a quick thing you can do to get over that afternoon slump (besides reaching for tea or coffee) might just involve pumping out a few jumping jacks or going for a quick walk around the block. Even simply changing your posture to a more powerful and dominant stance, such as sitting up or standing up tall with your hands on your hips, can give you more energy!
Tip #3: Find Ways to Reduce Stress
Stress is a huge burden on our bodies, especially in this modern age. Finding ways to cope with and tackle your stress can have huge impacts on your energy levels. For instance, when we feel stressed, sometimes, a few minutes of deep breathing can help us relax.
Other ways to reduce stress include cutting out alcohol, quitting smoking, learning to say “no,” and carving out time for yourself.
