6 Summer Travel Tips for Better Posture & Less Pain

Jul 3, 2023 | General Health

We are officially out of the woods; The warm weather has arrived, and summer holidays are on the horizon. If you’re traveling this summer, we’ve got a few tips for you to make your trip that much more comfortable. That way, you’ll come home relaxed and rejuvenated afterward as opposed to any pain or discomfort.

So, what should you know? How can you keep your spine in tip-top shape while enjoying your holiday to the fullest? Keep reading to find out.

Tip #1: Avoid flip-flops with soft soles.

We always suggest to our clients to avoid the soft-sole flip-flops and opt for Havaianas instead as they have a firmer sole. However, Havaianas will still need replacing every year, especially if worn a lot! They may also need a heal chip and a dot (Ask Antea to help you with this next time you’re in the office!)

Tip #2: Invest in a seat wedge.

A seat wedge can be your saving grace on long car or plane trips where you have to remain seated for hours on end. A seat wedge encourages good posture. Yet, if you’re out of luck on a seat wedge, you can create a similar effect by rolling a jumper or scarf and angling the seat to create that downward angle. Be careful not to sit directly on the rolled scarf or jumper as this won’t create the alignment we’re trying to achieve.

Tip #3: Create a better pillow with folded towels.

With hotel rooms or Airbnbs, you’re never quite sure what mattress or pillow you’ll get. If you can, consider bringing an ABC travel pillow. If this is forgotten or not possible, you can also fold up towels for your pillow to support good posture as you sleep. If you’re staying in a hotel, you may need to ask housekeeping for extra towels, so you have enough.

Tip #4: Careful tightening halter necks or bikini tops.

Halter necks on bikini tops can create neck and postural issues if tightened too much. Instead, be careful when tightening them around your neck, or opt for different fitted bikinis or tops in their place.

Tip #5: Ditch the tech gadgets.

We often lean forward to view our phones, tablets, and laptops, which can lead to forward head posture and pain. Instead, maybe try a digital detox while on your holiday. This will protect your spine and help you be more present and relaxed throughout your time off.

Tip #6: Enjoy it!

Don’t forget to soak it all in. Stay present and connect with those you’re traveling with. After all, these trips are often about creating memories that we’ll cherish for a lifetime.
