A common misconception is that cracking your knuckles leads to arthritis. But is it true?
In short, the answer is no. But let’s take a closer look at what’s going on beneath the surface.
Where Does This Myth Come From?
As per many myths and misconceptions, this one dates back to an old wive’s tale. But when we look a bit closer, it seems like it may have just been something to say to get people to stop doing it. After all, the sound of someone cracking their knuckles isn’t exactly a welcoming noise to our ears.
What Happens When You Crack Your Knuckles?
First up, it’s not your bones cracking together! If it were, the person cracking their knuckles would likely be in varying degrees of pain.
Instead, this noise arises when the fluid in your joints moves into a new gap in the joint. When the fluid is released, the gas releases and makes a “popping” sound.
So, will it lead to arthritis? Luckily, research indicates that there is no association between the two. But then, why do people crack their knuckles?
So, once you start, it’s hard to stop! This often comes down to misalignments in the joints and body. If we feel a misalignment, our body tends to send us signals to fix it, and this is why some people are more prone to cracking their knuckles than others.
