There’s nothing quite like a good night’s sleep! After a long day, many of us look forward to a restful night, unless… our night is anything but restful.
Maybe you wake up with aches and pains. Or perhaps you struggle to get to sleep in a timely manner. Whatever the case may be, struggling to get to sleep, stay asleep, or waking up with pain is quite the opposite of what we want to achieve overnight. However, fixing the problem could all come down to one simple tweak: Your mattress!
So, what makes a good mattress? And what do we recommend for optimal spine health and a good night’s rest?
The Key to Finding The Right Mattress
When it comes down to it, sleeping on a very firm and flat surface makes up the foundations for a good night’s sleep. Too soft and we end up with unsightly postures, causing pain and even trouble sleeping. For instance, if you’re sinking too much into the mattress, this can cause the spine to round unnaturally and cause misalignments. In turn, we may experience pain as we attempt to sleep, which may lead to a viscous cycle.
Surprisingly, even some mattresses marketed as “firm” can prove problematic. For instance, pocket sprung or combination mattresses often have a quilted texture on top, creating an uneven surface for sleeping. This can end up impacting the biomechanics of the body and interfering with its natural alignment.
Reflex foam is also considered extremely firm, yet it often won’t last that long. Over time, the foam begins to compress, and it no longer offers a flat and firm surface for proper spinal support. This means many end up spending more money to replace their mattresses sooner. On top of this, polyurethane foam is sometimes called “solid gasoline,” as it gives off toxic fumes that may be linked to short and long–term health conditions. Lastly, it’s highly flammable, and it is illegal in the USA to sell uncovered polyurethane foam as a mattress because of this hazard.
Additionally, memory foam mattresses claim to firm but most of them aren’t. Usually, they are quite soft and unsupportive, leading to many problems. Interestingly, even people who swear by memory foam might only love this type of mattress due to stress and other compensations throughout the body. In other words, they’ve become used to this and could probably benefit from a firmer mattress, which leads us into our recommendations!
Our Recommendations…
The best mattress you can buy is the ABC mattress. The ABC mattress has been designed by ABC™ practitioners to support the proper alignment of the spine. This ensures no more harm comes to their health and wellness and that adjustments made during treatment aren’t offset by a poor mattress.
Think about it: If you spend six to eight hours a night in bed (maybe even longer on the weekends!), you spend about a third of your life on top of your mattress. It’s undeniable that the type of mattress matters!
And even if the ABC mattress seems expensive, it can actually save you tons of aches and pains, as well as time spent trying to find the “right” mattress. That alone is worth it, which is why I encourage my patients to consider the ABC mattress if they are having difficulty sleeping comfortably. On top of this, the wrong mattress will rob you from feeling better and overcoming your pain but the right mattress will help you unwind and heal much quicker.
