What a posture corrector can do
- Remind you when you slump into a familiar position
- Hold your shoulders, head or trunk differently while you wear it
- Make you more aware of your posture at work or in training
- Support an active programme in some cases
What it cannot do
A brace cannot tell you why your posture looks the way it does. Habit, strength, pain, a spinal curve, or bones that are stuck forwards: a strap cannot tell the difference, and it cannot change bones. Nor can it promise your posture will stay put once it comes off.
Can relying on a brace do harm?
If a device makes you more comfortable or more aware, use it. The problem is when it becomes the whole plan and replaces moving, getting strong or finding out what is actually going on. If it causes pain, numbness or skin irritation, take it off.
What about lumbar supports and seat wedges?
A lumbar support or seat wedge is different. It changes what is beneath or behind you rather than pulling your shoulders back. We talk about seating as part of your care, because how you sit all day affects how well your corrections hold.
A better question than 'does it work?'
Ask what you want it to do. If you want a nudge to change position, a corrector can help. If you want your posture to change for good, you need to correct what is holding it there. That is what ABC™ does, with nothing strapped on.
