A rounded upper back, or a soft-tissue hump?
If the upper spine itself is more rounded, the proper term is kyphosis or hyperkyphosis. That is a structural posture pattern, and it is what we work with.
A soft-tissue pad at the base of the neck is something we look at too, as part of how your head, neck and upper back are carrying themselves. If you have an unexplained lump, especially a new or changing one, please see your GP first.
What you might notice in the mirror
- Your head sits forwards of your shoulders
- Your upper back looks more rounded
- Your shoulders roll forwards
- A bump is forming at the base of your neck
- Collars and necklines sit differently
- Stiffness across the neck and upper back, though some people feel nothing
What helps when the cause is postural?
A hump from a rounded upper back and a forward head is structural. Bones have shifted forwards and the body rounds and twists around them. Lifting your chin will not undo it, because no muscles can pull those bones back. ABC™ corrects them so the body can unwind.
When to see a GP
See your GP if there is an unexplained lump, if the curve is changing quickly, or if anything about it worries you. We would rather you had that peace of mind first. Otherwise, book a free discovery call.
How we help at Posture & Wellness
We look at your head, shoulders and upper back together, because the hump is the visible end of a pattern that runs through the whole spine. If it needs a medical opinion, we will refer you on.
