What does forward head posture look like?
From the side, your ear sits in front of your shoulder rather than above it. The shoulders round and the upper back curves to follow.
Why screens matter
Looking down at a phone loads the neck and shoulders. One glance is nothing. Hours a day, year after year, pushes the bones of the neck forwards into a position the body cannot pull back.
A simple self-check
Ask someone to take a relaxed side-on photo while you look straight ahead. Do not tuck your chin. If your ear sits clearly in front of your shoulder, you have forward head posture.
Habits that help
- Raise your phone and screen to eye level
- Use a separate keyboard and mouse with a laptop
- Change position often rather than holding one 'perfect' posture
- Get up and move through the day
- Keep your neck, upper back and shoulders strong and mobile
Can exercises fix forward head posture?
Exercise helps. Research shows programmes combining strengthening and stretching can improve forward head posture, and we encourage you to stay active. What exercise cannot do is move a bone that is stuck forwards, because no muscle pulls that way. If your head keeps drifting forwards however many chin tucks you do, that is why. ABC™ corrects those bones.
When to come and see us
Book an initial consultation if the posture is persistent, if neck or shoulder pain keeps coming back, if you get headaches that start in the neck, or if you have numbness, tingling or weakness in your arms.
How we help at Posture & Wellness
We look at your head alongside your upper back, shoulders and pelvis, because a forward head is the top of a pattern that runs through the whole body. We find the cause, explain it, and correct it.
