Why shoulders roll forwards
Long days at a desk, driving, phones, heavy bags and old injuries all push the body forwards. The upper back rounds and the shoulders follow. If the spine is stuck in a position the body cannot self-correct, pulling the shoulders back is working against the structure underneath.
A simple self-check
Stand naturally with your arms relaxed. Do your palms face backwards rather than towards your thighs? Now gently lift your chest and let your shoulders settle. If they spring forwards the moment you relax, something underneath is holding them there.
Habits and exercises that help
- Break up long stretches at the desk or on your phone
- Set your screen and keyboard so your shoulders can relax
- Strengthen the upper back and shoulder blades
- Keep the chest and shoulders mobile
- Train the whole upper body rather than relying on 'shoulders back' reminders
Why 'pull your shoulders back' is not the answer
Squeezing your shoulders back all day is tiring, and the moment you stop thinking about it they roll forwards again. That is not a lack of discipline. It is your body compensating for something else. Correct the structure and they can rest where they belong.
How we help with rounded shoulders
At Posture & Wellness we look at your shoulders together with your head, upper back and pelvis, because they are one pattern. ABC™ corrects the bones that have shifted forwards so your body can unwind and your shoulders settle back.
