Uneven shoulders and hips: what causes the asymmetry?

Nobody is perfectly symmetrical. One shoulder might sit higher, one hip might look more prominent, or you might always stand on the same leg. What matters is whether it is new or getting worse, whether it hurts, and why.

Why you might look uneven

Habit, old injuries, a bag on the same shoulder, your sport or your job can all tip you to one side. So can a spinal curve or a leg-length difference. There is another cause that is easy to miss: bones stuck forwards that the body cannot self-correct, so it compensates by twisting.

A simple self-check

Take relaxed photos from the front and back on a few different days. Does the same shoulder or hip sit higher each time? Does it change when you spread your weight evenly? If it is consistent, painful or getting more obvious, come and see us.

Should you try to force yourself level?

Not without knowing what is driving it. Pulling one shoulder down or hitching one hip up all day just adds tension on top of a compensation. Let us look at the cause instead.

When to get help

  • The asymmetry is new or clearly getting worse
  • It comes with pain, weakness, numbness or a change in how you walk
  • You have been told you may have scoliosis
  • You are not sure whether it is postural or structural
  • It bothers you and you want a clear answer

How we help with asymmetry at Posture & Wellness

Your postural photos record shoulder and pelvic height, so you have a clear starting point. If we suspect a structural spinal condition, we will refer you for X-rays or a medical opinion first. If the difference is your body compensating, ABC™ corrects the bones that have shifted forward so the body can untwist.

Frequently asked questions

Is one shoulder being higher than the other normal?

Small differences are common. What matters is how big the difference is, whether it is changing and whether anything hurts.

Does an uneven shoulder mean scoliosis?

No. Scoliosis is one possible cause among many and cannot be diagnosed from shoulder height alone.

Can posture make hips look uneven?

Yes. How you stand and which leg you load changes how the pelvis looks.
